Education: Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego, California
Paralegal: Chelsie Wandler
What do you do?
I am a litigation lawyer with a primary focus on family law, criminal defence, and civil litigation. I strongly believe in every client having a voice, and having that voice heard. I work directly with clients, making sure their rights are protected throughout the course of their matters.
I strive in my practice to reach a result favourable to my clients that avoids unnecessary litigation. However, I understand that some matters cannot be solved through negotiation or outside the aid of the courts. I have conducted trials at the Provincial and Supreme Court levels, and have appeared in front of the Immigration and Refugee Board Administrative Tribunal. I pride myself on advocating vigorously on behalf of my clients to achieve the best results possible.
My family practice includes: divorce, property and asset division, custody, parenting time of children, guardianship, allocation of parental responsibilities, child support, spousal support, restraining orders, parenting agreements, cohabitation agreements, separation agreements, marriage (prenuptial) agreements, matters involving the Ministry of Children and Family Development and matters involving the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program.
My criminal practice is comprehensive, and I have dealt with many types of offences such as assault, theft, and drug trafficking/possession including dial-a-dope operations.
My civil practice includes contract disputes, construction issues, personal injury claims including ICBC, negligence and misrepresentation claims.
What are your strengths?
I was a teacher before becoming a lawyer and have a unique perspective on matters involving children, family dynamics, and working with families to resolve conflicts in the best interests of the children. I understand the challenges of a separation or divorce on the parties, but more importantly, on the children. I believe my extensive work with children is an asset to my clients.
Under the tutelage of my mentor, former Judge Advocate General Colonel Jane Siegel, I have focused throughout my entire legal education on becoming a trial lawyer. I received top of the class honors in Trial Practice and Advanced Trial Advocacy, during my tenure in law school, and was a key member of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law Mock Trial team where I competed nationally against many of the top ranked law schools across the United States. The skills I learned there gave me the necessary skill set that is the foundation of my litigation practice today.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my clients. I care. I am in it with you, from the first meeting until you and I are finished with your case.
I recently won a civil trial where my client, the defendant, was being sued for breach of contract, and was accused of fraudulent misrepresentation. I was able to have all the claims against my client dismissed, and was successful on the counterclaim, where my client won money that was duly owed to him. The decision can be read here:
