Forget sunsets and what you ate for breakfast, the latest trend on social media are pictures of…happily divorced couples?
Well, one couple at least. S.N and C.N posted a happy photo of themselves shortly after filing for divorce at the Calgary courthouse. Accompanied by the hashtag #divorceselfie, their photo has gone viral with over 37,000 shares.
“Are we smiling because the partner we chose for forever turned out not to be the forever partner we needed? Of course not,” S.N posted, “We’re smiling because we have done something extraordinary (we think anyway!) We have respectfully, thoughtfully and honourably ended our marriage in a way that will allow us to go forward as parenting partners for our children…”
As is the case with social media posts, everyone is weighing in. Some have accused the pair of celebrating divorce but I think that is a misinterpretation of intention. By posting their #divorceselfie, S.N and C.N celebrated not the breakdown of their marriage, but the way they disassembled their lives.
“We have struggled,” S.N goes on to write, “but we have succeeded in the plan we came up with together, to come out on the other side as [the children’s] two parents who live in two houses who give them two teams to love them up two times as much.”
It sounds to me like the pair tackled this difficult time with intention, patience, and a lot of communication. Evidently, these are future-focused people who kept their eyes on what could be done to improve the lives of their family members, despite past heartache.
Not everyone can walk the path of separation with such finesse, but isn’t it refreshing to think it might be possible?
